Business
Situated close to Milan's main station and built in art nouveau style, the Gallia's interior of glass and ironwork echoes the sleek ocean liners of the 1930s. First opened in 1932, the hotel boasts 237 rooms and suites, a gourmet restaurant and excellent health spa facilities. In addition to a dedicated business centre, the main conference hall caters to groups of up to 600.

The 5-star Four Seasons Hotel, at the heart of Milan's shopping and fashion district, enjoys a well-deserved reputation. Luxury
The Carlton Baglioni, a member of the Leading Small Hotels of the World group, carries off the classical décor theme with some aplomb. Some of the deluxe rooms and suites boast their own private terraces with gazebos where guests can enjoy room service as they peer down on the shoppers below. Fourteen individually decorated rooms make up this bijou hideaway - an oasis of tranquillity just a stone's throw from Milan's top tourist attractions. Here, there are few concessions to technology, with books and fresh flowers replacing TVs and modems. The three top-floor terraced rooms are fitted with four-poster beds and air conditioning, while the others have overhead fans. There is no restaurant, but continental breakfast can be served in the room.

This 43-room hotel, just 10 minutes' walk from the Duomo, is perfect for anyone who is looking for a well-located hotel that won't break the bank. Guest rooms benefit from satellite television, pay TV, air conditioning and an in-room safe. You probably won't be bowled over by the décor, but all rooms are clean and comfortable with wooden floors, plain walls and bright soft furnishings.

Now established on the Milan hotel scene is the Park Hyatt Milan, which enjoys an enviable location sandwiched between the refurbished La Scala opera house and the Galleria Vittoria Emanuele II, just off the city's main square and the Duomo.
