Luxury

Hôtel Gault
The stone exterior of a 19th-century warehouse gives little clue of the sleek minimalism within this stylish Old Montreal hotel. Funky, colourful chairs add a light touch to the lobby, while Arne Jacobsen fixtures, heated bathroom floors, custom-made linens and a DVD library are some of the goodies in the individually designed loft-style rooms. Rates include breakfast.

Bonaparte
In the heart of Old Montreal, this romantic inn lies around the corner from Notre-Dame Basilica - the pricier rooms overlook the church's private gardens. Exposed brick walls, polished wood floors and antique-style wooden and wrought-iron furnishings give a cosy feel of another age, but the bright bathrooms and broadband Internet access are right up-to-date. All 30 rooms are non-smoking. Rates include a continental breakfast in the room or a full breakfast in the elegant, gastronomic restaurant.

Le Germain
This sleek downtown address is part of a small local chain of boutique hotels and the first of its kind in Montreal. The trendy décor is still up-to-date, with dark woods contrasting with earth-tone fabrics in the 101 loft-like rooms, with designer accessories balancing the minimalist effect. Perks like fresh fruit, Aveda toiletries, bathrobes and down duvets and pillows make it a stylish home-away-from-home. Other facilities include an exercise room and a meeting room accommodating 18 to 40 people. Rates include continental breakfast.

Le Petit Prince Bed & Breakfast
This gorgeous B&B near the Bell Centre in Downtown Montreal is a gem. Perfect for a special occasion or a romantic weekend away, the five bedrooms all boast wooden floors and exposed brick walls with original artwork by local artists, comfy beds, double Jacuzzi and either a fireplace or a stove. Two of the rooms also have balconies, and there is a comfy lounge-cum-dining area downstairs where the scrumptious breakfast, which changes daily and features the likes of crepes suzette, waffles and eggs Benedict, is served (although if you feel indulgent, brekkie can be taken to your room). The owner Robert and his team will make sure this feels like a home from home, any time of year. Book well in advance.
