Mumbai (Bombay) Hotels

Mumbai is a huge, sprawling city and offers the visitor a commensurately wide range of hotels. It encompasses the swishest, most luxurious establishments equipped with every modern convenience and the meanest, filthiest guest houses, with wheezing air-conditioning and dirty bed linen. The most expensive hotels quote their prices in US Dollars; only resident Indian nationals are permitted to pay in Rupees and, in most cases, the quoted Dollar rate is considerably more than its equivalent in Rupees. Other, lesser establishments quote their prices in Rupees. There are various local taxes that apply to hotel room rates; whether these are included in the stated rate or added onto the bill depends on the hotel. Generally, the more modest establishments attract a lower rate of tax. Visitors are strongly advised to check what taxes apply when making a reservation.

The hotels listed have been classified according to price as follows:
$ (up to Rs2,500)
$$ (Rs2,500 to Rs6,000)
$$$ (US$150 to US$300)
$$$$ (over US$300)
Prices are per double room per night. All the hotels listed here are air-conditioned throughout.

Luxury

Hotel InterContinental
The InterContinental occupies a restored 1930s building on Marine Drive. The refurbished rooms combine original marble fittings (baths, basins, etc) with the latest in modern gadgetry and design; the results are luxurious and stunningly stylish. The lobby is an essay in elegant restraint. And because the hotel has only 59 rooms, it is more intimate than its larger competitors.

The passage of time has not diminished its cachet, the quality of its service or its hospitality. The hotel offers several restaurants, a business centre and a wide selection of fashionable shops.
