Business Etiquette

Americans tend to be less formal than Europeans (in dress and manners) but normal business courtesies are still observed. Banking and legal professions are more formal than computer and media companies, although all are quick to use first names. Continue with European formalities until the attitudes of your host have been established. Women are just as likely as men to wear trouser suits. Short-sleeved shirts are acceptable in summer. Business cards are commonly exchanged at meetings.

Punctuality for business and social events is expected, so allow time for traffic delays. Business hours tend to be 0800-1700 but working late and at the weekend is common. Working lunches are more common than working breakfasts - anything from a sandwich to a short restaurant meal. Meeting for drinks or dinner after work on a Friday is a popular end to the working week, although Americans drink in moderation (and rarely at lunchtime at all). If you receive an invitation to someone's home, a bottle of wine or flowers are appropriate gifts. Offer to share the bill at restaurants. E-mail is the preferred means of communication.
