• Peruse the attractions of Baghdad such as the Iraqi Museum with impressive ancient artefacts, the Baghdad Museum depicting traditional Baghdadi life and the Museum of Pioneer Arts, which displays pre-1950s works by Iraqi artists in a traditional house.
• Savour the sounds and smells as you wander the bazaars of the towns and cities.
• Make a pilgrimage to Kerbala - one of Shiite Islam's holiest sites, with two revered mosques it is also one of the greatest pilgrimage centres in the Islamic world.
• Visit another sacred city for Shiites - Najaf. Find the mosque with the sacred tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib - founder of the Shiites.
• Explore the marshes - an area between the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers. Here it is sometimes possible to see sarifas (Marsh Arab dwellings) and many species of waterbirds.
• Visit Basra, once called the Venice of the East, thanks to its canals lined with elegant 19th-century houses.
• Walk around the maze of narrow streets in Mosul, from where muslin cotton originates.
• Go to one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities of the world - Arbil, whose beginnings trace back over 10,000 years.

At present, travellers are not advised to visit Iraq due to its highly dangerous security situation.
