• Explore the capital, Tripoli, with its old walled city - a picturesque African jumble of narrow alleyways leading to traditional mosques, souks, houses and khans (public houses).

• Visit Assai al-Hamra (Red Castle), a spectacular fortress that houses a maze of courtyards and buildings; situated on a promontory above Tripoli. Be fascinated at the Jamahiriya Museum that was designed in conjunction with UNESCO, next to the castle on the Green Square.

• Base yourself in Benghazi - Libya's second-largest city, on the Eastern edge of the Gulf of Sirte, close to a number of beautiful beaches including Ras Alteen, also a location of an amazing archaeological discovery of Greek and Byzantine graves from an underwater city.

Swim at undiscovered beaches away from the municipal beaches of Tripoli and Benghazi.

• Find the five famous ancient Greek cities: Shahat (Gorina), Sussa (Apolonia), Tolmitha (Ptolemias), Tukra (Tokhira) and Elmerj (Barqa), in the eastern region set in the beautiful Green Mountains.

• Discover the historical sites of the battlefield of Tobruk, east of Ras Alteen, and the town of Cyrene, east of Benghazi. Or branch out to the lush forested range of the Green Mountains, easily reached from these areas, and a great area for walking.

• Don't miss the Ubari Sand Sea - a stunning infinity of sand dunes, with a series of saline lakes to cool off in.
