Getting There by Air

Air Canada (AC) (www.aircanada.com) runs inter-provincial and international (US) flights. Other airlines also provide such a service to Manitoba.

Main Airports

Winnipeg International Airport (YWG) (www.waa.ca) is 10km (6 miles) northwest of the city centre (journey time - 20 minutes). To/from the airport: There is a regular bus service every 20 minutes. A number of hotels offer shuttle services. Facilities: Duty-free shop, post office, shops, hotel, restaurant, banks, car hire and car parking.

Getting There by Water

Main ports: The only major coastal port is Churchill (www.portofchurchill.ca) on Hudson Bay, which is frozen from November to early June.

Getting There by Rail

Winnipeg is the most central hub of VIA Rail (tel: 1 888 842 7245; www.viarail.ca) in Canada. The Canadian takes four days to connect Vancouver in the west to Toronto in the east, passing through Winnipeg several times a week in each direction. The Hudson Bay service runs northwards within Manitoba from Winnipeg to The Pas (the interchange station for services to Lynn Lake), Thompson and Churchill.

Getting There by Road

Excellent road services connect Manitoba with Ontario (through Kenora), Saskatchewan (Regina) and the USA (Grand Forks and Bismarck, North Dakota). The road system within Manitoba is also excellent and covers over 19,794km (12,300 miles). 

Coach: Beaver Bus Lines (tel: (204) 989 7007; www.beaverbus.com), Grey Goose Bus Lines and Greyhound (tel: 1 800 661 8747; www.greyhound.ca) run inter-state services.

Taxi: Available in all larger towns. Taxi drivers expect a 15% tip. 

Documentation: National driving licences are accepted.

Getting Around Towns and Cities

Services are run by local authorities, with a wide network of bus services in Winnipeg provided by Winnipeg Transit (tel: 1 877 311 4974; www.winnipegtransit.com) where a flat fare is charged. There are also good bus services in other towns.
