Main Airports

Main airports: Detroit Metro (DTW) (website: www.metroairport.com) is 32km (20 miles) west of the city centre. To/from the airport: SMART buses and taxis are available to downtown areas. Facilities: ATMs, car hire and currency exchange.

Getting There by Rail

Detroit is on the Amtrak ‘Michigan Services' Chicago-Toronto line, which runs from Chicago to Toronto, (tel: 1 800 872 7245, in the USA only; website: www.amtrak.com). The station is located at 11 West Baltimore Avenue; car hire is available.

Getting There by Road

Greyhound buses are most frequent in the south; only a few buses serve the Upper Peninsula (tel: 1 800 231 2222, in the USA only; website: www.greyhound.com).

Approximate driving times:
From Detroit to Buffalo is 6 hours, to Dallas is 24 hours and to Seattle is 49 hours. All times are based on non-stop driving at or below the applicable speed limits.

Approximate bus journey times:
From Detroit to Chicago is 6 hours, to Duluth is 19 hours 15 minutes and to Los Angeles is 32 hours.

Getting Around Towns and Cities

Most larger communities have bus and taxi services. Detroit also has a city-centre rapid rail system, the People Mover, which connects 13 stations in downtown Detroit. DDOT and SMART buses serve the city centre and suburbs respectively.
