Mississippi Travel Guide - Going Out

Food and Drink

The tiny Delta town of Belzoni claims to be the catfish capital of the world. The highlight of the year is the Catfish Festival, which sees the crowning of the Catfish Queen and a catfish-eating contest.

Regional specialities:
• Farm-raised catfish.
• Fried Chicken.
• Black-eyed peas.
• Turnip greens.
• Gumbo (meat or shellfish stock stew with vegetables).

Nightlife

Las Vegas-style entertainment casinos abound, especially in Greenville, Natchez, Philadelphia, Tunica, Vicksburg and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Vicksburg has the Bottleneck Blues Bar, decorated in a 1930s delta-style.

Shopping

Antique shops and malls are plentiful. The Canton Flea Market, held in May and October, is ever-popular. In Port Gibson the ‘Pieces and Strings' market runs from the last weekend in March to the end of April and features African- and European-American quilts and quilting demonstrations.
