Food and Drink

The variety of cuisine available in Canberra is impressive, with over 300 restaurants offering food from all corners of the world. Civic is a good place to start, before trying places in Manuka and Griffith. For Asian food head to Dickson.

Regional specialities:

• Trout from the streams and lakes of the Snowy Mountains, just outside the territory.
• Beef and lamb come from the farmlands surrounding Canberra.
• Dairy products such as creams and cheese.

Regional drinks:

• Cool-climate wines and fine, full-flavoured Chardonnays and Shiraz.

Nightlife

Despite the daytime orderliness, nightlife is actively promoted by the large range of pubs, restaurants, nightclubs, live music venues and jazz, piano and wine bars. There are many film shows and a boutique casino.

Shopping

A wide range of goods, including Australian arts and crafts, is available from department stores and specialist shops. Galleries and museums are good for souvenirs and crafty pieces, and are usually open seven days weekly. For boutique fashion shops make a bee-line for Manuka.

Shopping hours: Opening hours for most stores in the city are Mon-Thurs 0900-1700 and Fri-Sun 1000-1600.
