Prince Edward Island Travel Guide - Top Things To Do

• Explore the northern shore of Prince Edward Island National Park (website: www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/pe/pei-ipe), where the beaches are protected by cliffs and dunes; it is particularly well suited for swimming. Other good beaches are at Cavendish, Brackley, Basin Head, Sandspit, Blooming Point, Cedar Dunes.

• Try deep-sea fishing; chartered boats are widely available from July to September, most commonly for cod, mackerel and flounder. The island's waters are particularly renowned for giant bluefin tuna.

• Roam the island's many recommended cycling routes, including the 350km (219-mile) Confederation Trail. This runs from Tignish in the west to Elmira in the east, with several interconnecting lines branching off to virtually every corner of the province.

• Take advantage of excellent facilities for cross-country skiing at Brookvale Provincial Ski Park, which hosted the 1991 Canada Winter Games. Prince Edward Island has over 1,100km (688 miles) of snowmobiling trails.

• Sample some of Prince Edward Island's sumptuous seafood: the International Shellfish Festival (website: www.peishellfish.com) in September offers a fantastic chance to munch on lobster and chowder from some of Canada and the world's top gourmet chefs and celebrity cooks.

• Take a scenic drive. Options include: the Blue Heron Drive, from Charlottetown to Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst; the Lady Slipper Drive, with Acadian history at Miscouche and Mont Carmel; and the King's Byway, which traverses the hilly farmland of the eastern interior.

• Play golf on one of more than two dozen golf courses on Prince Edward Island, from facilities suitable for learners and families to championship layouts by top designers.
