• Explore Bratislava (website: www.bratislava.sk), the capital of the Slovak Republic, with its Old Town (Stavé Mesto), 15th-century hrad (Bratislava Castle), and the Slovak National Gallery (website: www.sng.sk) on the waterfront.

• See the famous ruined castle, Devín, 9km (6 miles) northwest from Bratislava. Near here the Germans were heavily defeated in 864 and 871 and the area is of immense Slovak Nationalist importance.

• Look up at the relatively intact medieval walls of Trnava, which was the centre for Hungarian church administration from the 16th to the 18th century.

• Visit Nitra (website: www.nitra.sk), the country's agricultural capital. Walk up to the ruined hrad (castle). The gothic katedrála (cathedral) at the castle contains the remains of two 10th-century saints; next door is the baroque Palace of the Bishop of Nitra.

• Head for the hills - the High Tatras, Low Tatras and Malá Fatra National Parks offer an abundance of beautiful wildlife, mountain valleys and lakes.

• Visit the Spis (Zips) region, where there are many religious sites to check out including the gothic church of Sv Jakub (St James) and the Romanesque cathedral of Sv Martin.

• Amble around Spis Castle. Dating from the 12th century, it is the biggest medieval castle in central Europe. Nearby, the walled town of Levoca became the wealthy capital of the Union of Zips Saxons in 1271.

• Plunge into the Aqua City (website: www.aquacityresort.com) resort in Poprad, which offers numerous thermal pools, spa treatments, and cryotherapy therapy, where the body is cooled down in a -121°C (-186°F) chamber, with numerous reputed health benefits.

• Admire the Slovak Republic's finest art nouveau building - the Andrássy Mausoleum (website: www.snm.sk) at Krásna Hôrka.

• Marvel at the Herl'any Geyser (northeast of Kosice), which sprays cold mineral water as high as 30m (100ft) every 33 hours.
