South Carolina Getting There

Main Airports

Charleston International Airport (CHS) (website: www.chs-airport.com) is located 19km (12 miles) north of downtown Charleston. The state is accessible from several international gateways, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Cincinnati, New York, Philadelphia and Raleigh/Durham airports, with connecting services to domestic airports (see below). To/from the airport: A shuttle service and taxis are available to downtown Charleston. Facilities: ATMs, business centre and car hire.

Domestic Airports:
A number of national and regional carriers serve the airports in Charleston, Columbia, Florence, Greenville/Spartanburg, Hilton Head Island and Myrtle Beach. Hilton Head Island is also served by Savannah (Georgia) International Airport.

Getting There by Rail

Rail service through America's Amtrak (tel: 1 800 872 7245, in the USA only; website: www.amtrak.com) system is available to Charleston and Columbia on the main New York-Washington-Miami routes, and to Greenville on the New York-Washington-New Orleans route. Trains on these routes also stop at a number of smaller centres.

Getting There by Road

Greyhound (tel: 1 800 231 2222, in the USA only; website: www.greyhound.com) is the main carrier, with bus terminals in Charleston (3610 Dorchester Road) and Greenville (100 West McBee Avenue).

Approximate bus journey times:
From Charleston to Savannah is 3 hours, and to Charlotte is 6 hours. From Columbia to Savannah is 2 hours, to Washington, DC is 10 hours, and to Miami is 13 hours.

Getting Around Towns and Cities

The Coastal Rapid Public Transit Authority serves Myrtle Beach and Conway. In Myrtle Beach, a trolley travels from the central beach area to Broadway at the Beach via Myrtle Square Mall during the summer. CARTA runs a reliable bus service within Charleston, while Downtown Area Shuttles (DASH) operates a frequent service from the tourist information point.
