• Walk along the Tidal Basin, a beautiful lake famous for its Japanese cherry trees, which bloom in the spring for the Cherry Blossom Festival (website: www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org).
• View the Lincoln Memorial (website: www.nps.gov/linc), and stand next to a larger-than-life statue of President Abraham Lincoln overlooking the Reflecting Pool and the Capitol Building in the distance. The Gettysburg Address is inscribed on the south wall of the monument.

• Tour the Capitol (website: www.aoc.gov), where Senators and Representatives meet under a magnificent 55m (180ft) dome to shape US legislative policy.
• Inspect Arlington National Cemetery (website: www.arlingtoncemetery.org) and read inscriptions on the graves of the 175,000 US soldiers who fought in wars from the American Revolution onwards.
• Explore Rock Creek Park, established in 1890 'for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of the United States'. Visitors can enjoy a picnic, hiking, playing soccer and biking along with other outdoor activities. While at the park, view The Old Stone House, a museum formed to celebrate the everyday life of middle class colonial America.
• Admire the gleaming white marble columns and Greek architecture of the US Supreme Court (website: www.supremecourtus.gov), the highest court in the country.
