• Tour the White House (website: www.whitehouse.gov), which has been the home of every US president since 1800. (Tours are restricted and only available with passes from members of Congress or, for foreign visitors, from their respective embassies.)
• Walk along the Tidal Basin, a beautiful lake famous for its Japanese cherry trees, which bloom in the spring for the Cherry Blossom Festival (website: www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org).
• View the Lincoln Memorial (website: www.nps.gov/linc), and stand next to a larger-than-life statue of President Abraham Lincoln overlooking the Reflecting Pool and the Capitol Building in the distance. The Gettysburg Address is inscribed on the south wall of the monument.
• See the Jefferson Memorial (website: www.nps.gov/thje), a monument built in tribute to President Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence. Open-air concerts are held at the Jefferson Memorial in the summer.
• Climb the Washington Monument (website: www.nps.gov/wamo), which, at 169m/555ft, is the tallest masonry structure in the world. This monument was built for President George Washington, 'Father of his Country'.
• Peruse the modern National Gallery of Art, with its stunning East Building designed by the world-famous architect I M Pei, and its beautiful sculpture garden.
• Tour the Capitol (website: www.aoc.gov), where Senators and Representatives meet under a magnificent 55m (180ft) dome to shape US legislative policy.
• Inspect Arlington National Cemetery (website: www.arlingtoncemetery.org) and read inscriptions on the graves of the 175,000 US soldiers who fought in wars from the American Revolution onwards.
• Explore Rock Creek Park, established in 1890 'for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of the United States'. Visitors can enjoy a picnic, hiking, playing soccer and biking along with other outdoor activities. While at the park, view The Old Stone House, a museum formed to celebrate the everyday life of middle class colonial America.
• Admire the gleaming white marble columns and Greek architecture of the US Supreme Court (website: www.supremecourtus.gov), the highest court in the country.
