Kosovo Travel Guide - Going Out

Food and Drink

Grilled meat dishes are popular and a good bet. Many dishes use freshwater fish. Vegetarian choices are limited.

National specialities:
• Cevapcici (charcoal-grilled minced meat).
• Raznjici (skewered meat).
• Sarma or japrak (vine or cabbage leaves stuffed with meat and rice).
Pljeskavica (meat patties of beef and lamb).
• Leskovačka mućkalica (pork with tomato and onion sauce).

National drinks:
• Kosovan wine, especially Velika Hocha.
Turkish coffee (Turska kafa).
• Rakija (spirit usually made from grapes).
Slivovica (a potent plum brandy).

Tipping: 10% is expected.

Nightlife

Pristina has the best nightlife scene with a range of lively bars, clubs and late-night cafes in the city centre around Rruga Fehmi Agani and Rruga Garibaldi, and also in the Santea neighbourhood.

Shopping

Prizren, Peja and Gjakova are some of the best places to find handicrafts. Metalwork includes filigree, silver, copper and brass crafts. Kosovar wood engravings and musical instruments are also popular souvenirs. Other purchases include embroidery, lace, leatherwork, knitwear and Turkish coffee sets.

Shopping hours: Mon-Fri 0800-1200 and 1500-2000, Sat 0800-1500 (many shops are open all day Sat). Supermarkets and grocery stores keep longer hours.
