Food and Drink
Cuisine is largely French influenced. Seafood is in abundance. The local speciality is shellfish. Restaurants also offer traditional British, international and oriental cuisine. A wide variety of alcoholic beverages is available. Spirits, beers and wines are cheaper than on the mainland. A gastronomic highlight is the annual Seafood Festival in May.
Shopping
Alderney has its own duty-free retail outlets where visitors can purchase spirits and tobacco at exceptionally low prices prior to their departure. There is no VAT, which means particularly good bargains can be found on sports equipment, jewellery, perfume, quality clothing and electrical goods. A Guernsey Bailiwick tax is imposed on certain goods such as spirits, wines, beers and tobacco. Prices on luxury goods are lower than in the UK, although the overall cost of food is higher.
St Anne has a collection of boutique shops selling gifts and kitchenware. Special purchases include Alderney pullovers, local pottery and crafts. Alderney has its own dairy which produces particularly delicious ice cream.
Shopping hours: These vary, but the majority of shops open Mon-Sat 0900-1730. Shops generally close for lunch and on Wednesday afternoons. Shops may open on Sundays during the high season.
