• Explore the island's main town, St Anne, which dates back to the 15th century and has numerous shops and inns lining its cobbled streets.
• Take a ride in a reclaimed London Underground carriage with the Alderney Railway (website: www.alderneyrailway.com).
• Ramblers delight: all parts of the island can be reached on foot and there are panoramic walks along the cliffs. Alderney Wildlife Trust (website: www.alderneywildlife.org) has published a series of recommended walks and also offers guided tours throughout the main season.
• Sail to the other Channel Islands or even France, which is only 12km (8 miles) away. The Alderney Sailing Club (website: www.sailalderney.com) organises several annual events and races, including the Alderney International Sailing Regatta (usually held in July).
• Swim or windsurf from the numerous sandy beaches. Some of the best beaches can be found on Arch Bay, Braye Bay (also popular for waterskiing), Clonque, Corblets (one of the best swimming beaches and also recommended for board surfing) and Say.
• Fish with freedom - no permission is needed to fish anywhere from the coastline or the harbour, and the local shop offers equipment and advice. The Angling Festival (website: www.alderneyangling.com) is held annually in October.
• Play golf at the well-maintained nine-hole course, also with a bowling green. For information, contact the Alderney Golf Club (website: www.alderney.org/golf).
