Equatorial Guinea Travel Guide - Top Things To See & Do

• On Bioko Island, the capital, Malabo, is located on the north coast and overlooked by the striking Pico Malabo volcano, which provides a number of secluded hiking trails and opportunities for mountain climbing. Malabo is a small but attractive town, with pleasant Spanish colonial architecture, open plazas and a lively market. Frederick Forsyth wrote his novel The Dogs of War here. The Spanish Cultural Centre, Malabo Catherdral and Malabo Court are worth a visit.

• Climbing up the 3,000m (9,843ft) Pico Basile provides a panoramic view of the island and, on a clear day, Mount Cameroon can be seen.

Arena Blanca, situated on the west coast, is the only white beach on Bioko Island. During the dry season, thousands of butterflies can be seen. Luba also has some lovely deserted, white-sand beaches and breathtaking vistas. Bata is the principle town in the region of Rio Muni on the mainland. It is a lively town with a few restaurants, bars, hotels and markets. It is also close to some beautiful beaches, notably those at Mbini, 50km (32miles) south of Bata.

• The town of Moca is situated in the Moca valley in the southern highlands. The area supports a range of natural attractions with cultural significance and is also a spiritual centre for the Bubi people, the earliest inhabitants of Bioko Island.

• The Cascades of Moca, Lake Biao and Lake Loreta are popular visitor destinations which are inhabited by several species of monkey. The small village of Ureca is on the south coast of the island. During the dry season, turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. An hour's hike from the village are the Rio Eola waterfalls with clear, cool pools beneath, perfect for swimming.

• The Monte Alen National Park is an area spanning 1,400 sq km (540 sq miles). It is accessible via a series of trails through the jungle and is inhabited by elephants, leopards and several bird species.
