Osaka Cruise Guide

Overview

Japan's third largest city, Osaka is the heart of a dense metropolitan concentration, with an array of historical and urban delights. It's set strategically at the mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay, and remains the economic powerhouse of the Kansai region.

While Osaka's history goes back well over 1,000 years, the city is today known for its futuristic cityscape, cutting-edge architecture and modern industry. Like Tokyo, this is a great city for wandering with much to discover in its vibrant streets. Osaka is a bustling, hard-working city that feels creative, energetic, versatile and quite friendly.

Sightseeing

Enormous skyscrapers are only one piece of Osaka's puzzle. The city also boasts an impressive 400-year-old castle (partly reconstructed in the 1990s), as well as fascinating  museums, picturesque shrines and lush gardens.

Before delving into the city head for the open-air Floating Garden Observatory on top of the Umeda Sky Building. At 173m (567ft) high, the views are magnificent.

Osaka Museum of History provides a fascinating view of the city's development. For insight into the natural world, visit the Osaka Science Museum, with its amazing planetarium and engaging exhibits for adults and kids alike. Equally impressive is the massive Kayukan aquarium, home to around 30,000 sea creatures.

Visitors interested in Osaka's temples and shrines should first of all head for the Simiyoshi Taisha Shrine, one of Japan's oldest.

Osaka's Universal Studios offers a bit of theme-park fun, with its many rides, shows and restaurants.
