The Spanish region of Galicia is a mountainous region with a strong sense of identity; in terms of history and culture, it is closely linked to the Celtic lands of Northern Europe. La Coruña itself is a large port town with an attractive bay and fine beaches. However, for many visitors to Galicia, the main draw is the exquisitely preserved medieval cathedral city of Santiago de Compostela, centred on the shrine of St James (Santiago). The shrine marks the end of a centuries-old pilgrim route called the Way of St James, which still brings thousands of people from around the world to the splendid Baroque cathedral every year. The Praza do Obradoiro, the square where the cathedral stands, also contains the oldest hotel in the world, the Hostal dos Reis Católicos, which is now a parador (state-owned hotel). The entire Old Quarter is a honeycomb of architectural charm, perfect for wandering around.

Leather goods (especially suede coats), handcrafted wooden furniture and toys, religious relics and local wine.

Galicia is famous for its shellfish, especially good in casseroles, and a number of regional seafood dishes such as hake à la Gallega. Local wine is good and cider from the neighbouring region of Asturias is also a popular drink.
