Shopping in Cusco

Cusco offers a wider range of better-quality souvenirs than anywhere else in Peru.

Key areas:

San Blas is Cusco's artisan quarter and there are a number of workshops here worth visiting, including Taller Olave, Plaza San Blas 651 and Taller Mendivil, Plaza San Blas, both of which sell striking artefacts, sculptures, colonial religious images and icons, ceramics and earthenware. Check out Primitiva, Hatunruniyoc 495, for contemporary Peruvian art.

Gold jewellery is a popular souvenir and items of varying prices and quality are sold across Cusco. Textiles are on sale at the Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco, Avenida Sol 603A, where you can see how they are made although you will pay for the privilege.

Buy a few alpaca and llama products whilst you are in Cusco. Kuna (branches in Plaza de Armas and Hotel Libertador Palacio del Inka, Plazoleta Santo Domingo) sells top quality alpaca and llama clothing as well as super soft items made from the rarer vicuňa and guanaco. Also try Alpaqa, Calla Procuradores 398, for cheaper, high quality alpaca products. Werner and Ana, Plaza San Francisco 295A, is also worth a visit.

Markets:

First stop should be the Centro Artesanal, also known as the Red Market, at the southern end of Avenida Sol.

Opening hours:

Standard hours are Monday to Saturday 0900-1800. Shops are often open on Sunday too, but for more limited hours.
