Dubrovnik - Activities
This won’t be to everyone’s tastes, of course, but Croatia as a whole is considered rich in hunting potential, with various bodies offering hunting excursions and licences. The area around Dubrovnik is mainly suited to small game, with mouflon (a type of wild sheep) the main attraction.
Croatia was among the first countries in the world to establish a national climbing organisation, and when you see the options presented by the Dalmatian mountains, you’ll understand why. Gorges, peaks, caverns and spurs are all abundant, and hiking and climbing trips can be sourced with little difficulty. Be aware that inexperienced climbers may struggle.
The coastal regions of Dubrovnik are plentiful in small and medium game fish, while further out in deeper water it’s possible to come across bluefin tuna or swordfish. Trips can be arranged with various tourist agencies, although heading further out might need to be planned with private fishermen.
This area of the Adriatic is well known for its diving possibilities (Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a fan of the region, it’s said) and each year sees a healthy number of holidaymakers donning masks and making the most of the controlled diving zones off the coast.

It’s bordering on criminal to come to Dubrovnik without taking in one or several of the outlying islands. Lokrum is just 15 minutes away from Dubrovnik’s Old Town quay and remains a haven of nature, while the larger Mljet is one of the most attractive islands in the whole of the Adriatic. Meanwhile, the Elephantine Islands – Koločep, Lopud and Šipan – have all become tourist attractions themselves.
The Dubrovnik region lays on an enticing range of different adventure activities – sea kayaking is especially popular (one-week tours are offered), but other options include mountain-biking, horseback-riding and rafting.
