Money & duty free for Estonia

Currency information: 

Euro (EUR; symbol €) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of €500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of €5 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.

Estonia joined the eurozone on 1 January 2011, with the Euro replacing the Kroon, which is removed from circulation on 14 January 2011.

Credit cards: 

Credit cards are widely accepted. Most banks will give cash advances on credit cards with a passport. There are ATMs in nearly all towns.

Travellers cheques: 

Traveller's cheques can be changed in banks in most larger towns, although it has been reported to be problematic.

Banking hours: 

Mon-Fri 0900-1600; hours may vary. Although banks are usually closed on Saturdays, bureaux de change are open 0900-1500, and some open on Sundays. The main banks in Estonia are Hansapank, Sampo Pank and SEB Eesti Ühispank.

Currency restriction: 

There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency. However, amounts exceeding €10,000 or equivalent must be declared if travelling from or to a country outside the European Union.

Currency exchange: 

All major currencies can be exchanged at banks and bureaux de change. The value of the Kroon has been tied to the Euro.

Estonia duty free

Estonia is within the European Union. If you are travelling from the UK, you are entitled to buy fragance, skincare, cosmetics, Champagne, wine, selected spirits, fashion accessories, gifts and souvenirs - all at tax-free equivalent prices. There are no longer any allowance restrictions on these tax-free items.

If you are arriving from a non-EU country, the following goods may be imported into Estonia by persons over 18 years of age without incurring customs duty:

• 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250g tobacco.
• 1L of alcohol over 22% or 2L of alcohol up to 22% and 2L of wine.
• 1kg of food products.
• 50g perfume.
• 250mL eau de toilette.

Banned imports: 

It is not permitted to import meat or milk into Estonia. Contact the authorities for further information (tel: (6) 800 4444; www.emta.ee).
