Five of the best: zoos
Bronx Zoo, New York
The largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, the Bronx Zoo comprises 265 acres of parklands and naturalistic habitats and is home to many endangered species as well as the world's largest man-made rainforest. Hop on the monorail and take a guided tour with views down onto your favourite beasts - transporting you from the city to the Serengeti in a heartbeat.
Taronga Zoo, Sydney
Take the 12-minute ferry ride from central Sydney and hop on the cable car to the scenic Taronga Zoo where visitors can marvel at their furry friends from around the world, all to a stunning backdrop of the Sydney skyline. Head to the amphitheatre perched atop the cliff and gaze at some of Australia's best-loved creatures in the daily shows on offer.
Night Safari, Singapore
The world's first wildlife park built specifically to view nocturnal species at night, the Night Safari is divided into eight geographical zones, which can be explored either on foot via three walking trails, or by tram. With a welcome lack of fences, the safari lets you get up close and personal with the inhabitants, including a walk-through bat enclosure.
Whipsnade Animal Park, UK
With over 2,500 animals sprawled across 600 acres of beautiful Bedfordshire countryside, it's easy to see why Whipsnade consistently tops the list for UK attractions. Watch cheeky chimp Elvis swing about in his mammoth play area, or be captivated by the fastest land animal on earth at the newest experience, Cheetah Rock.
Hannover Adventure Zoo
One of the main tasks of the historic Hannover Zoo is to save animals from extinction and promote the creation of natural environments without visible barriers. The Zambezi exhibit includes an artificial river where boats carry visitors alongside giraffes, rhinoceros, gazelles and flamingos right in the heart of Hanover.
