Approximately 15,000 runners compete in the annual Edinburgh Marathon each year. Runners follow a course, which is lined by around 100,000 spectators, that takes in some of the many monuments and landmarks of this beautiful city. Besides cheering the runners on through the historic streets of Scotland's capital city, spectators can enjoy festival activities around the course, including Scottish bagpipers, rock bands and a host of on-route entertainment. To cater for runners of all levels of ability, a 'Hairy Haggis' Team Relay will be run immediately after the start of the marathon. Relay runners take part in teams of five, splitting the marathon distance between them with the longest leg less than 11km (7 miles).
