Berlin Marathon

Berlin, Germany
28 Sep 2008

The famous Berlin Marathon is an annual event that first took place on 13 October 1974 with a mere 284 runners representing just four nations. The event now attracts close to 60,000 runners from over 100 countries and includes a half-marathon and a women's competition. The race starts in Strasse de 17 Juni at the Charlottenburg Tor close to Ernst-Reuter Square and ends at Kurfurstendamn. The course takes runners through 10 Berlin districts: Charlottenburg, Tiergarten, Mitte, Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg, Neukolln, Schoneberg, Steglitz, Zehlendorf and Wilmersdorf passing such famous landmarks as the Brandenburg Gate, the Victory Column, the State Opera and the cathedral. Live bands, food and drink stalls add to the atmosphere and over a million spectators turn out to cheer on the competitors.

Getting There

Rail: Berlin's main train stations are Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten ('Zoo') in the western city centre and Ostbahnhof on the edge of the eastern inner city. Both stations are connected to the Berlin S-Bahn urban rail network; Bahnhof Zoo is also linked to the U-Bahn (underground).
