Portugal

Undiscovered, exciting, modern but historically resplendent and beautiful; just some of the many ways to describe the wonderful country that is Portugal. Magnificent beaches, natural wonders, cosmopolitan shopping and European style make it the perfect holiday destination any time of year.

Rich history
It is Portugal's rich history that makes it such a unique country, and there is nowhere better to soak this up than in the old cities of Beja or Viseu. Both came to prominence in Roman times and have since also enjoyed various royals and priests erecting magnificent churches, buildings and monuments, ensuring there are endless sights to marvel at. In Beja, take one of their 'Sounds of Time' walks and stroll through the city while you learn about its history at your own pace and on foot.

Shopping in Lisbon
For those who love to stroll the streets to find their favourite brands, head to Lisbon for some of the best shopping in Europe. Lisbon is a cosmopolitan and vibrant city perched atop rolling hills and full of seductive charms. Wander through cobbled laneways and find delightful boutiques and specialist Lisboa shops, or visit the districts of Barrio Alto or Chiado for international and designer brands.

Vilamoura's beaches
It is not just history but its sundrenched beaches that make Portugal such a popular holiday destination, and in Vilamoura you can find plenty of them. An expansive tourist complex offering prime accommodation, fabulous nightlife and plenty of sporting and leisure activities, there is something for everyone. The lifestyle is relaxed and welcoming, and the Portuguese's passion for sailing is enough to rouse anyone's curiosity.

Azores archipelago
If it's a real escape from the pressures of modern life you're after, the Azores could well fit the bill. Thrown up by underwater volcanoes, this group of nine islands lies about 1,600km (1,000 miles) west of Portugal, in the Atlantic, and life here is unhurried. You may wish to be based on the largest island, São Miguel, or take in three or four of the islands - the choice is yours! Go whale-watching, trek over volcanoes to discover glorious waterfalls, or swim in one of the crystal-clear watering holes. The scenery is breathtaking and the beaches are unforgettable.

Alentejo region
Beja, in the Alentejo region, takes its name from the Moors who occupied it in the sixth century, and you can still see evidence of Moorish architecture. With its 13th-century castle, and as a former regional capital under Julius Caesar, this place really is for history lovers. If you're a history fan, you'll want to make a trip to Centro Region's Viseu, which also goes back to Roman times. You won't want to miss the old churches, or the splendid architecture of the cathedral.
