Cajun Mardi Gras
Lafayette, United States14 Feb 2009 - 24 Feb 2009
Lafayette's five-day Mardi Gras festival is a period of feasting and merriment leading up to the fasting period of Lent. Drawing on the influences of its Cajun and Creole communities, the Mardi Gras celebrations in Lafayette have a distinctive spice and flavour that has helped establish this as one of the biggest and best events in the region. Celebrations include a large parade through the streets, fairground rides, live music, dancing, street stalls, food and drink and much more, with most revellers donning fancy dress costumes for the occasion. The carnival closes with the spectacular Lafayette Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association Pageant and Ball, which is a glitzy affair that's completely free of charge.
