Vasaloppet Week

Mora, Sweden
20 Feb 2009 - 01 Mar 2009

Visitors can expect a week of skiing, music, entertainment and exhibitions during this annual event at Mora in central Sweden. The highlight of the week is the Vasaloppet cross-country skiing competition. The event has historical origins and commemorates an event which happened in the 1500s when a young Swede named Gustav Eriksson Vasa tried to organise a revolt against the Danish King, Kristian the Tyrant. After failing to win the support of the people of Dalecarlia, he was forced to flee along the now famous route between Mora and Salen (90km). After a change of heart, the Dalecarlians sent their fastest skiers after Vasa who caught up with him at Salem. The modern day competition itself has a long history which dates back to 1922 with the skiers following the same route but in the reverse order. In addition to the skiing, there is also an entertainment programme that includes live music.
