The Caribbean is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world and Cuba is no exception. Cayo Largo del Sur of the Canarreos archipelago is made up of beautiful white beaches, and a town brimming with shops - great for retail therapy. For a more secluded outpost, try the Playa Maria La Gorda, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, renowned for its pristine coral reefs and extensive diving.

There are many beaches in El Salvador that require strong swimming skills, but Plakaford Beach is the perfect place for families with safe, gentle waters. For a more unique excursion, try Boipeba Island just south of El Salvador. Cars are not allowed but there are many transport alternatives such as bicycle or horseback. With the Atlantic on one side and the lush Inferno Estuary on the other, these palm-lined beaches are great for relaxation and a step outside the ordinary.

On the western coast of India, Goa is a popular holiday destination offering a rich Portuguese colonial history. For a rustic experience, head to Palolem Beach where you can go completely low tech, lazing in a hammock or in bamboo huts overlooking the glistening waters. Benaulim Beach is another alternative to tourist spots, and is important in Hindu mythology as the birth place and namesake for Goa. Besides inviting sand and sun, the beach also boasts exciting dolphin cruises.

Surfing is the main attraction in Queensland due to its epic wakes on most of its beaches - Noosa Heads has various bays for all skill levels. If you want to avoid the crowds and are up for a little adventure, try Turtle Bay. Located on an isolated island part of the barrier reef chain, you can only get there by boat. Truly a remarkable experience, Turtle Bay's seclusion allows for intimate diving among precious corals and offers a quiet beach far from any distractions.
