Restaurants in Geneva

Being the international city that it is, Geneva has a culinary scene that’s as diverse as it is extensive. If you’re after haute cuisine and genuinely innovative dining, the options are far-ranging, and there’s also a strong selection of places specialising in cuisine du terroir, the classic local dishes that make this region such a strong draw for foodies. Bon appétit!

The Geneva restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over SFr100)
Moderate (SFr50 to SFr100)
Cheap (under SFr50)
These Geneva restaurant prices are for a three-course meal for one, including half a bottle of house wine or equivalent, tax and a compulsory 15% service charge, unless otherwise stated.

La Favola

Price: Moderate

This intimate little Italian restaurant in the heart of Geneva’s Old Town excels in fresh pasta and an authentic atmosphere. The two dining rooms are fairly limited in size, as is the menu, but this only adds to the overall feel – devotees here hail it as the best restaurant in Geneva. Look out for specialities like the lobster salad and Milanese-style risotto, although the seasonal menu changes regularly. The restaurant is closed Saturday lunchtime and all day Sunday.

Address: Rue Jean-Calvin 15, Geneva, Switzerland
Telephone: (022) 311 7437.

Chez Jacky

Price: Cheap

This tiny, popular bistro with simple green-and-white décor and a shady pavement terrace, in an unlikely location near Geneva’s train station, serves classic cuisine with an imaginative twist, as well as superb desserts. Dishes include fillet of beef with morel mushrooms and a ginger crust or wild tuna scented with Perigordine truffle. The wine list includes some fine Genevois wines. Closed Saturday and Sunday, and there’s usually a hiatus over summer too.

Address: Rue Necker 9-11, Geneva, Switzerland
Telephone: (022) 732 8680.

Les Brasseurs

Price: Cheap

Les Brasseurs, located just opposite Cornavin station, is a convivial eatery that stands as the only place in Geneva to brew its own blanche, blonde and ambrée beers. They also serve German and Alsatian specialities such as bacon and onion flammenküche (Alsatian tart). Hugely popular with a young crowd. Arrive before 2130, when the venue starts to get crowded. Closed Sunday lunch.

Address: Place Cornavin 20, Geneva, Switzerland
Telephone: (022) 731 0206.

Au Pied de Cochon

Price: Cheap

Finding good-quality affordable eats in Geneva can be a fairly tricky pastime, a fact which makes Au Pied du Cochon something of a stellar find. The signature dish, as the restaurant name might suggest, is stuffed pig’s trotter, but there’s a whole smorgasbord of other roasted goodies to be washed down with wines. In short, well-above-par food in a comfortable bistro setting – and in a trendy part of town too.

Address: Place du Bourg-de-Four 4, Geneva, Switzerland
Telephone: (022) 310 4797.

Le Tsé Fung

Price: Moderate

Part of the stylish La Réserve Genève hotel in Bellevue, Le Tse Fung serves up traditional Chinese cuisine in Geneva. It’s several cuts above the usual fare – by way of proof, the extensive menu features fourteen separate types of steamed dumpling alone. The various set menus on offer are a chance to sample the care and attention that goes into the cooking. In fine weather, the restaurant opens a terrace. Book early.

Address: Route de Lausanne 301, Bellevue, Geneva, Switzerland
Telephone: (022) 959 5959.

Le Chat-Botté

Price: Expensive

Mais oui – yet another Michelin-starred restaurant. Situated in the 5-star Hôtel Beau-Rivage, Le Chat-Botté (the name means ‘Puss In Boots’) serves excellent contemporary cuisine, drawing its clientele from both the business and leisure worlds. Specialities include rack and mignon of rabbit with Taggiasche olives or king prawn and squid stuffed with riso venere (black Venus rice). Reservations are strongly recommended.

Address: Quai du Mont-Blanc 13, Geneva, Switzerland
Telephone: (022) 716 6920.

La Perle du Lac

Price: Moderate

Situated in the Mon-Repos Park overlooking Lake Geneva, La Perle du Lac has been serving French cuisine, fish and seafood specialities, such as lake perch fillets and osso bucco des lotillons (angler fish), as well as excellent Swiss wines, to the local business community since 1930. Perhaps best enjoyed in summer, the restaurant (closed Monday) boasts a charming open-air terrace and lush garden.

Address: Rue de Lausanne 126, Geneva, Switzerland
Telephone: (022) 909 1020.

Chateauvieux

Price: Expensive

Located in a former farmhouse in the western suburb of Peney-Dessusand and surrounded by the Geneva vineyards, Châteauvieux is one of Geneva’s finest gourmet establishments. Thanks to the creative seasonal French cuisine of owner-chef Philippe Chevrier – also a pioneer on the Geneva wine scene – the restaurant is fully deserving of its two Michelin stars. It’s expensive, as you’d expect, but well worth a splurge if you can get a table.

Address: Chemin de Châteauvieux 16, Satigny, Geneva, Switzerland
Telephone: (022) 753 1511.

Auberge du Lion d'Or

Price: Expensive

Located in the up-on-high Cologny district (dubbed the Beverly Hills of Geneva), the Auberge du Lion d'Or is a Michelin-starred fish restaurant offering panoramic views over the city and lake. The restaurant is decorated in a smart, classical style and guests can enjoy alfresco dining on the terrace in summer. Two chefs, Frenchman Gilles Dupont and Irishman Thomas Byrne, create delicacies such as red mullet with fennel gnocchi, all enhanced by a list of fine, international wines. Saturday and Sunday, private functions only.
