Restaurants in Gothenburg
The Gothenburg restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over kr900)
Moderate (kr400 to kr900)
Cheap (up to kr400)
These Gothenburg restaurant prices are based on the cost of a three-course meal for one person, including a half bottle of house wine or equivalent (where available). Please note that many restaurants are closed on Sundays, so check before visiting.
Lilla Tavernan
A neighbourhood restaurant that's always packed at the weekend, Gothenburg's ‘little tavern' offers authentic Greek cuisine at reasonable prices. Expect the usual suspects, from tarama and moussaka to grilled lamb and baklava, friendly (if sometimes hectic) service and warm atmosphere.
La Sombrita
A lively and fun Spanish restaurant that specialises in tapas, La Sombrita is one of many pleasant restaurants along Linnégatan in a slightly Bohemian part of town. The food, drink and atmosphere are all great, and there is often live music.
Kock & Vin
The best from French and Swedish food traditions come together in this bistro-style restaurant where particular emphasis is given to the seasonality of the ingredients and the harmony between the food and wine served. With its warm, welcoming atmosphere, Kock & Vin is a popular choice among locals.
Joe Farelli's
Is all that gorgeous Swedish food getting to you? What about tucking into a rack of ribs, a good old-fashioned burger or an extra large pizza for a change? If that's what you're after, Joe Farelli's is just the ticket. This Italian American restaurant on Avenyn offers all the classics in very pleasant surroundings, and at reasonable prices. There is live sport on TV, tables outside and a kid's menu. Ideal for groups, and it's open on Sundays.
Hos Pelle
This elegant, spacious Gothenburg restaurant serves Swedish gourmet cuisine at reasonable prices. The ingredients are typical of the classical Swedish kitchen, and many of the dishes have a rustic quality, but the context of it all is modern and contemporary.
Wasa Allé
This superb gourmet restaurant offers a modern take on Swedish cuisine, with a strong emphasis on organic and locally sourced ingredients. Think crayfish terrine with pear purée, white cheese and cumin bread for example, or pan-fried cod and cod brandade with broad beans, roasted turnip, and sweet potato and pork dumpling. Most diners opt for the ‘surprise menu', which changes daily and makes the most of seasonal produce. There is a solid wine list featuring some 250 labels (organic or biodynamic), and the service is spot on. One of our favourite restaurants in Gothenburg.
Sjömagasinet
Located by the Älvsborg Bridge with a nice view of Gothenburg's harbour, Sjömagasinet is a gourmet restaurant specialising in fish and seafood. One of the very best restaurants in Gothenburg, it has been awarded a star in the Michelin Guide. It's not cheap, but to experience Swedish fish and seafood cooking at its best, it's the place to go.
Restaurang Fond
Seasonality is a key word at Fond, and flavours from Sweden's culinary traditions are prominent, but most dishes come with a creative, contemporary twist that adds a modern edge to the traditional elements. Located on Götaplatsen, right next to Gothenburg's Art Museum, this is an exciting restaurant that has earned itself a star in the Michelin Guide.
