Hotels in Hamburg
There’s an abundance of hotels in Hamburg, so with a little searching, there’s nearly always a bargain to be had somewhere. Most of the top-end hotels in Hamburg offer 5-star luxury of the sumptuous old-fashioned kind, but there are also plenty of good, clean ‘no-frills’ pensions offering excellent value at the other end of the scale. Most of the major international chains are here, and because of Hamburg’s status as one of Germany’s economic powerhouses, much of the city’s hotel trade is geared to cater for international business travellers. As such, it is worth noting that many hotels, contrary to the norm, have higher rates during the week and actually lower their prices on weekends. It never hurts to ask.
The Hamburg hotels below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Luxury (over €150)
Moderate (€75 to €150)
Cheap (up to €75)
These Hamburg hotel rates are for a double room per night and include all taxes but not breakfast.
Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten
Old-fashioned opulence on a regal scale. Many regard this enormous 19th-century townhouse on the edge of the Inner Alster Lake, comprising 156 rooms and 32 suites, as the best hotel in Hamburg, and consequently there’s a price tag to match. Awash with fresh flowers, expensive antiques, original oil paintings and even a series of near-priceless tapestries, this is a grand hotel in the true European tradition with all the trapping you’d expect. Well located for shopping but a little off the beaten track for much of the city’s nightlife.
Le Royal Méridien Hamburg
Spectacular, mammoth and immaculate, this imposing residence offers pretty much everything you could wish for; architecture that seamlessly blends the contemporary and traditional, a swimming pool, solarium, conference and ball rooms, business facilities, a highly regarded ninth-floor restaurant and bar with amazing views, and a total of 284 rooms and suites boasting wide-screen TVs, en-suite bathrooms, high-speed internet and, of course, fluffy bathrobes. Top all this off with immaculate service, and it’s no wonder this hotel in Hamburg remains a perennial favourite with upscale business and leisure travellers alike.
Sofitel Hamburg Alter Wall
This canal-side stunner with its own private pier was once a bank belonging to the German mail service. These days however, behind the 19th-century façade, the building offers accommodation with cutting-edge contemporary styling and an unassailably hip vibe, not to mention two great restaurants and a world-class spa containing indoor pool, sauna and solarium. All of the 241 rooms enjoy spacious, marble-clad, en-suite bathrooms, and the central downtown Hamburg location seals the deal.
25hours Hotel Hamburg No.1
One of an ever-burgeoning number of design hotels in Hamburg, this establishment punches well above its weight in terms of style (vibrant 1960s-flavoured retro-chic, smoothed off with a dash of Philippe Starck), amenities (including a statement-piece bar and restaurant serving German-Italian fusion cuisine), and value (all this is available with rooms starting at under €100), all of which have made 25hours a very funky hit with a fashion-conscious younger crowd.
Gastwerk Hotel Hamburg
There may be a plethora of choice when it comes to design hotels in Hamburg these days, but Gastwerk proudly wears the mantle of being the city’s first. Even those who don’t speak German won’t be surprised to discover that 150 years ago this grand brick building housed the city’s first gasworks. Its proportions and the clever use of space in its conversion are the hotel’s biggest attraction, with light-flooded and impressively proportioned reception areas, 141 generous rooms and suites, and a beautifully understated modern aesthetic throughout.
Hotel Wedina
A more intimately proportioned boutique hotel situated in a quiet residential area near Alster Lake, this Hamburg establishment’s tasteful décor is more focused on comfort than cool. There’s an attractive garden with a pool and a distinctly Mediterranean feel, while rooms are cosy and inviting. Staff are friendly, and the hotel prides itself on providing sanctuary to a number of heavyweight literary guests, such as Henning Mankel and Amos Oz.
CityHotel Monopol
For those who like to be in the thick of it, this cheap hotel in Hamburg is centrally positioned along the raucous Reeperbahn’s nightlife mile. Fortunately, all of its funkily furnished, 80-plus rooms are fully soundproofed, but this is certainly the perfect place to stay for the budget-conscious party crowd. Even the cocktail bar here is open 24 hours a day. The generous breakfasts are included and very welcome after another big night.
Fritzhotel
Located in the Sternschanze area opposite a park and just beside the U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations, this is a smart, modern and clean hotel in Hamburg that’s intimate enough to have a character of its own. Its 17 single and double rooms are well proportioned, some even have balconies, and the local vicinity, which has a reputation as something of an artists’ quarter, offers plenty of pleasant green spaces, cafés and bars.
Hotel Accord Novum
Belonging to a modest chain, this hotel of 23 rooms is a clean, comfortable and secure establishment in Hamburg, which has also benefited from a thorough refurbishment in 2010. Offering good value for money, the hotel’s biggest draw is undoubtedly its city-centre location, just a few hundred meters from the main rail station, shops, restaurants, the river, and a wealth of major historical sight and attractions.
