Restaurants in Hamburg
The clichéd notion of German cuisine consisting exclusively of schnitzels, spuds and pickled veg has been a relic for years now, but of all the cities in Germany in which to enjoy a wealth of gourmet experiences, Hamburg ranks high among the very best. The finest restaurants in Hamburg make full use of the abundance of fresh seafood, as fishermen bring in a daily catch that includes lobster and shrimp, turbot and sole. Eel soup is a traditional dish of the region that’s still popular, as is the internationally famous Stubenküchen or ‘hamburger steak’.
Being a truly cosmopolitan city, the choice of dining experiences in Hamburg is totally international, from gourmet French cuisine, to Italian pizzerias, high-end sushi or a taco to go. For those who like to push the boat out, as of 2010, Hamburg boasts 11 Michelin-star restaurants, placing it on a par with Berlin. But whatever your budget or preference, you can be virtually certain you’ll find somewhere to suit in Hamburg.
The Hamburg restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over €50)
Moderate (€25 to €50)
Cheap (up to €25)
These Hamburg restaurant prices are for a three-course meal for one without drinks.
Abendmahl
This little restaurant just off the Reeperbahn attracts a youthful clientele usually preparing to hit the bars and clubs later on. The atmosphere is laid back and lively, much like the small but ever-changing menu, which focuses mainly on French, Italian and German dishes. There’s a popular and inventive cocktail menu as well, and after one of the excellent deals they offer on the set, three-course meal, you’ll be well set up for your big night out in Hamburg.
Hummer Pedersen
Possibly best described as ‘the fisherman’s fish restaurant’, this harbour-side business concern founded in 1879 still supplies lobster and shellfish to many of Hamburg’s best restaurants. However, within the establishment’s own intimate and constantly bustling bistro, opened here in 2003, you can enjoy the same delicious luxury seafood at a fraction of the cost. Some locals come to eat here on a daily basis, and the lobster salad with potato pancakes is a well-deserved favourite.
Suryel
In a country where the cuisine can still occasionally seem as if it was designed exclusively for carnivores by sausage makers, this is a vegetarian haven, or possibly heaven, in Hamburg. There’s a great range of simple, seasonal salads and pasta dishes for those looking for a light snack, as well as a tasty and imaginative array of tofu dishes to satisfy those looking for something more substantial, and with most main dishes coming priced at under €10, this little restaurant is the healthy option for your wallet too.
Da Paolino
Many restaurants in Hamburg enjoy a river view or waterside location, fewer however can be found actually out on the water, but Da Paolino is one of them. This restaurant, built on a pier that juts out into Alster Lake from its southern edge, is a convivial Italian eatery that brings plenty of its own southern European sparkle to the waters. Gourmet Italian cuisine at affordable prices, with the accent on antipasti and pasta dishes, is the order of the day here, and this much-frequented restaurant gets even busier during summer months with the chance to dine alfresco on the jetty.
Fischereihafen Restaurant
This restaurant has been an institution in Hamburg for nearly 40 years and is generally regarded as the best seafood place in town. Demurely squeezed into a space between two warehouses by the fish market, this is a classic example of a restaurant for those in the know. Inside, the cosy layout consists of the restaurant and a separate oyster bar, and all the seafood served in both is purchased daily from the local auction, making for an exiting and varying menu that uses only the freshest catch from the North Sea.
Tafelhaus
Frequented by the local great and good, visiting celebrities and food lovers from all over the world. Famous chef Christian Rach has enjoyed a well-earned reputation as one of the best chefs in Germany for several decades, and since 2004 he’s had this restaurant in Hamburg with the ambience and harbour view to match. The cuisine is generally Mediterranean, with subtle infusions of Asia, and favourites here, such as veal shank with avocado mousse or curried-apple soup, provide the perfect examples. There’s also a very comprehensive wine cellar, but to enjoy this exclusive dining experience amongst the city’s elite, advanced booking is a must.
Le Canard
With resident chef Ali Güngörmüs proudly wearing a Michelin star on his lapel, this fine-dining restaurant in Hamburg has a reputation for excellence that has reached far beyond the city limits. Simple recipes given a brilliant and imaginative twist are his signature. Here, you can sample simply dressed fresh local shellfish followed by an inspired creation for dessert, such as the notable quince and champagne soup. Décor is light and modern, and the decked terrace, with its splendid view across the harbour, is very popular in summer, however making reservation here is essential year-round.
Landhaus Scherrer
Many of the best restaurants in Hamburg have a tendency to ignore their German gastronomic heritage, not so this highly regarded eatery, located in a beautiful period property dating from 1827 (once an old brewery) and set near the edge of the Elbe River. Here, the chef has a well-deserved reputation for cooking traditional regional dishes and lightening them with imaginative international flourishes. Service is impeccable, as is the wine list (with over 600 wines to choose from). The north-Germany speciality here is the Vierländer duck for two.
Restaurant Nil
A favourite amongst Hamburg’s creative and media types who love its unconventional location. Once an old shoe shop with much of the original 1950s décor maintained, this is certainly a restaurant with both an aesthetic and a culinary style all of its own. The food itself is high-end bistro fare prepared by a skilled team of chefs and served at prices that are extremely reasonable for such a sophisticated menu.
