Things to do in Hamburg

Road-karting

Visit any major conurbation in Europe and chances are you’ll find a go-kart track somewhere out on the periphery. However, Germany being the home of the autobahn, here in Hamburg they offer a slightly more unusual karting experience. If you have a full driving licence with you, then you’ll be able to take a go-kart that’s fully road legal out onto the city’s highways and byways. Karts have a top speed of 85kph (53mph), and rules of the road obviously still apply – other than that, the world’s your kart track!

Sailing

Of course, in a harbour city teeming with rivers, lakes and canals, many of the most popular outdoor pursuits take place on the water. And on a clear sunny day in Hamburg, what could be more pleasant than sailing a boat across the broad tract of Alster Lake at any time of year? Sailing boats such as Skippi 650s, big enough for the whole family, can be hired by the hour or for a full day, giving keen sailors plenty of time to explore this 3km (2-mile) length of water. Lessons and longer courses for novices and children are also available.

Canoeing

For those who prefer to take to the water under their own power and who really wish to explore the breadth of Hamburg’s myriad rivers and canals, canoeing offers the perfect opportunity and is such a popular local pastime that there are already 25 official canoe clubs affiliated with the Hamburg Canoe Association. The Canoe Association itself can be contacted to put you in touch with the best companies offering canoes for hire, and will provide a very useful map of this 130km (81-mile) tangle of waterways. Canoes in Hamburg are usually hired at an hourly rate.

Walking / Hiking

If you feel you’ve had enough of the urban sprawl (even in a city as green as Hamburg), or you simply want to explore a little further afield, then a visit to the stunning Duvenstedter Brook Nature Reserve is highly recommended. Located just outside the city’s northern suburbs, this protected 800-hectare (1,977-acre) area is comprised of marshlands, forests and heath, all equally beautiful. Watch the deer roam as you hike and explore, or to discover more about the wildlife join one of the guided walks that take place during the week.

Swimming

The moment you catch sight of the the Holthusen Baths' unique 19th century facade, it is clear that this is not just just any old pool complex. The exclusive swimming pool offers waves generated every half hour, an outdoor pool heated year-round, Turkish baths, steam rooms and, for those who really like the heat, a traditional Finnish sauna. Massages are also available, as is light refreshment at the bistro.

Golfing

For those who can never leave home without their clubs, Hamburg and its near vicinity offers therapy in abundance, with at least half-a-dozen golf courses of professional level located in and around the city. One the best regarded is Golf Club auf der Wendlöhe, which is considered by many to be the best golf course in Germany. Whatever your opinion, there is no denying the beauty of the landscape and surroundings over the 27 holes available to play here. There’s also a 30-tee driving range and a club house with a lively and convivial atmosphere. Visitors are always welcome.

Water park

For a family day full of good, clean fun, you couldn’t do much better than the Bondenwald complex. With its great range of pools, it also boasts one of the longest water slides around, sure to please the older kids, while the big, shallow Babalu water basin filled with aquatic toys is guaranteed to keep the tots happily amused. Grown-ups can relax in the beautiful sauna garden, and for those who can’t keep still, there are even football pitches and volleyball courts in the grounds.
