Hotels in Havana
The hotels in Havana below have been listed classed into three different pricing categories:
Luxury (over CUC200)
Moderate (CUC150 to CUC200)
Cheap (up to CUC150)
The prices quoted above are the starting price for a standard double room and include taxes and breakfast unless otherwise specified. The prices below are rack rates, prices will drop (sometimes significantly so) when rooms are booked as part of a package, online, or before departure. Bear in mind too that some hotels drop their prices in the low season (March to June, excluding Easter Week, and September and October). Take care with star rankings for Cuban hotels - subtracting one from marketing blurbs helps appropriately manage expectations.
Hotel Nacional
Built in the 1930s by the North American mafia, and since declared a national monument, the Hotel Nacional is the granddaddy of all Cuban hotels and a destination in its own right. The rich and famous have always favoured its beautiful gardens overlooking the Malecón and still do - famous guests from then and now include Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Steven Spielberg, and Uma Thurman (to name a few). An incarnation of the Buena Vista Social Club plays here on Saturday nights. The hotel's cigar bar is tops (especially during December's film festival when the Nacional is packed with luminaries) and the Cabaret Parisien is popular for its scantily-clad, feathery floor show. The rooms here are nothing fancy; upgrade to the sixth (executive) floor if you're coming for more than the history.
Meliá Habana Hotel
Located far from the downtown hustle and bustle but close to 'Embassy Row', this Havana hotel facing the sea has 428 comfortable rooms, including 16 suites, all with mini-bar, satellite TV and either a terrace or balcony. Most have sea views (even the standard rooms). Upgrade to the hotel's 'Royal Floor' and enjoy personalised service, bed linen menu, free Internet and other added value perks. There are several restaurants (all recommendable), one of Cuba's largest swimming pools, a fitness centre, meeting rooms that can accommodate between 14 and 300 people, a cigar tasting room, and lush, beautiful furnishings throughout.
NH Parque Central Hotel
A true 5-star hotel well-situated in the heart of Central Havana and within walking distance of Old Havana, the Parque Central is surrounded by such architectural gems as the Gran Teatro de la Habana (where you can catch the world famous Ballet Nacional de Cuba) and the Museo de Bellas Artes (with the world's finest Cuban art collection). There are 277 spacious rooms and suites (request one with a Parque Central view) and all have luxury bathrooms, satellite colour TV, mini-bar, safety deposit box and direct dial telephone. There is also a massage and fitness centre, a swimming pool, and extensive meeting and conference facilities. This is the hotel for business travellers to Havana.
Saratoga Hotel
The newest addition to Havana's luxury hotel scene, the Saratoga offers understated elegance in a prime location across the street from the majestic Capitolio Building. There are 96 equally comfortable rooms, but choose wisely as décor varies from charming colonial to modern chic. Try for a room on the top floor for expansive bay views. Rooms come equipped with satellite TV and DVD, safe deposit box and mini-bar. There is 24-hour room service, a solarium, a gym, a spa, secure parking and conference rooms.
Hotel Sevilla
This grand, historic hotel in Havana is a feast for the eyes, from the exotically tiled lobby to the sweeping city views from the Roof Garden Restaurant (Havana's looking pretty good from the hotel bar as well). Its location (steps from the Paseo del Prado, Gran Teatro de La Habana and many museums) puts Havana's highlights at your beck and call. The rooms are comfortable and the lobby is always abuzz with live music, clinking cocktail glasses and laughter.
Raquel Hotel
Bang in the heart of Old Havana and a few blocks from some of the city's most attractive historic plazas, Hotel Raquel is a standout. The colonial building has been meticulously restored and the 25 comfortable rooms, though all different, come with satellite TV, and air conditioning. There's also internet service, a tiny fitness centre with a sauna, a lobby bar and a beautiful terrace on the third floor.
Hotel Saint John's
This hotel in Havana's leafy Vedado section of town is solid value. Within walking distance of the Malecón, several notable restaurants and the city's top jazz club, the location is terrific for night owls. Local couples line up around the block to gain entrance to Pico Blanco , the hotel's famous disco on the top floor. All the 86 rooms here have air conditioning and satellite TV - some even boast unbeatable sea views. This Havana hotel is favoured by a younger crowd and is a decent place to meet other travellers. There's a small rooftop pool.
Park View Hotel
A great location combines with a nice price to make the Park View a perennial favourite. Close to both the famous Museo de la Revolución and the exquisite Museo de Bellas Artes, this small Havana hotel provides a warm welcome to the city. Rooms all have air conditioning, satellite TV and a safe deposit box. There is also a restaurant (with awesome city views) and bar on site.
