Melbourne family holidays
A vibrant cosmopolitan city, located on magnificent Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne has numerous gardens and parks which gives a relaxed and pleasant feel to the city that is well suited to a stress-free break with the family. Combined with a wealth of museums, galleries, wildlife and a fantastic climate, Melbourne makes a fantastic destination for both adults and kids alike.
Collingwood Children’s Farm
Children can learn all about farm life and interact with chickens, goats, cows, lambs and ponies. The farm is set in a beautiful nook by the Yarra River in the grounds of the stunning Abbotsford Covent.
Kids can marvel at the rays, groupers and sharks that cruise around a 2.2-million-litre tank, and occasionally the odd scuba diver swimming before your eyes.
Old Melbourne Gaol
Take kiddies for an eerie tour around the jail that was the setting for 136 hangings, most famously for that of Ned Kelly in 1880. Exhibits include a collection of death masks, the scaffold where Ned Kelly was hung, his gun, and a suit of armour worn by a member of his gang.
Children will be enthralled at Australia's largest museum, boasting an indoor rainforest, a giant Rubik's-cube-shaped Children's Museum, the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, and assorted displays featuring dinosaurs, insects and much, much more.
The award-winning Melbourne Zoo houses more than 300 animal species from within and beyond Australia. There is an African rainforest with gorillas, orangutans, hippos and big cats, as well as a particularly impressive butterfly house and a bushland exhibit, home to many of the country's native wildlife species.
A 90-minute drive south from Melbourne, Phillip Island features a nature park and various attractions. Highlights include The Penguin Parade, which takes place nightly at sunset, when the world's smallest penguins emerge from the sea and waddle up the beach to their burrows for the night.
Transport the family back in time at this giant open-air museum that tells the story of life during the gold rush. The streets of Sovereign Hill bustle with people dressed in period costume going about their business in the shops, hotels and school. Kids can get stuck in and pan for real gold.
