Gallery of Ireland

Ireland's east coast has the famous delights of Dublin. Georgian architecture, superb shopping and a vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Get lost ambling through the historic streets. Or hop on the Dart train along the coast to while away the afternoon in one of the little seaside villages.

Make sure you venture further afield too, and explore the ancient history of the region. The Proleek Dolmen in County Louth will grant you a wish if you can land three pebbles onto its 46 tonne capstone. Or so legend has it. The whole region is home to ancient monuments echoing with stories of valourand sacrifice. Newgrange is an ancient passage tomb, older than the pyramids, and the Hill of Tara is the 5,000 year-old seat of the old Kings of Ireland.

Wicklow is known as the ‘Garden of Ireland', with Mount Usher and Powerscourt House known around the world. If you meander through the county however, you'l l hit upon smaller gardening gems - or go during the Wicklow Garden Festival, until September, and you can take part in workshops, master-classes and open evenings.

Sample Irish whiskeys at the Tullamore Dew Distillery in County Offaly. A visit to the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre takes you through life in a small Irish town from the early 1800s onwards, while also showing how whiskey is made. Finish off the tour with a wee nip of the premium whiskey.

The region also boasts many fine golf courses, including the world-renowned K Club, home of the Ryder Cup 2006. If golf doesn't float your boat, you might like to chillout in a spa... Monart is a stunning five star spa in Wexford, which is nestled in amongst the lush Irish countryside. It was named as one of Condé Nast's top spas in the world. If you can make it to Wexford when the Opera Festival is on, you'll enjoy the town at its best, with a warm welcome and an amazing atmosphere.

Kilkenny is the centre for crafts. Have a look at our video of Kilkenny local Mick, who will take you on a tour of his top haunts - to a trad music session, a ruined priory, and meet his friend with the tame fox.
