Be inspired ... Dominican Republic Family holidays

Gallery of Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has soared in popularity as a tropical hotspot for families seeking sun, sand and an affordable holiday in the Caribbean. The island's main attraction is magnificent golden sand beaches stretching along its 1,400km (870-mile) coastline.

Alongside a turquoise lagoon, Club Med Punta Cana on the island’s east coast is a modern-day paradise for family holidays. Lying between 400 yards of private beach and a shady coconut grove, the resort proudly boasts a new look, courtesy of Aurelia Design. The intimate decor of the new 70 m² (750 ft²) suites featuring coral stone and noble wood, and the overflow pool is a must for parents and children alike. The new spa is an idyllic haven for adults, while children can play to their heart's content in a spanking new water park. The revamped restaurant and bar provide a delightful meeting place for all members of the family.

Elsewhere, the island’s northern, Atlantic side contains numerous tourist attractions and resorts, particularly in the 64km (40-mile) zone between Puerto Plata and Cabarete.

Puerto Plata itself offers a long string of affordable beachfront resorts - great for families. In addition, it boasts a reputation as one of the world's best windsurfing spots, a boon for active children.

A nearby marine animal park called Ocean World Adventure Park (Cofresi Bay) is also popular with all ages. Kids can watch a dolphin or sea lion show, pet a sting ray or nurse shark, snorkel with thousands of colourful tropical fish, and even feed a Bengal tiger at the jungle-like Tiger Grotto.

The resort also serves as a gateway to laid-back Cabarete (famous for kiteboarding) and Sosua, a budget-friendly beach village with low-cost shopping, dining and good snorkelling.

Families with teens should devote time to visiting the stunning colonial buildings of the capital Santo Domingo where the island's African heritage, introduced by slaves brought to the island by the Spanish, is reflected in its music. The popular song and dance, the merengue, blends both heritages and is celebrated in several festivals which draw large numbers of national and international musicians.

Nature-lovers may be impressed on a boat trip to Lago Enriquillo. Located in a rift valley, this saltwater lake features three islands. The largest, called Isla Cabritos, is a national park renowned for its flamingos, iguanas and crocodiles.
