Be inspired ... Vietnam Beach breaks

Gallery of Vietnam

Vietnam is renowned for its rich and varied history but is rapidly becoming one of the hottest destinations for travellers seeking a beach break in the Far East. Away from the bustle and commerce of the country's cities and the fertile rice fields found in the  countryside lie a number of beach destinations which cater to the serious sun worshipper or those wanting to escape the crowds.

Hoi An and China Beach

Hoi An was an important trading port in the 15th century but is now an artist's mecca located close to China Beach, the former hang out for GIs in search of rest and recuperation during the American War. UNESCO-protected Hoi An is a paradise for shoppers, diners and photographers and retains its small-town feel, but today its narrow laneways are filled with tailor shops and artist stalls. There are numerous accommodation options on the nearby beach from resorts replicating the town's diverse architecture to the most opulent offering in the country boasting pool villas and butler service.

Nha Trang

Further south, Nha Trang is perhaps the country's premiere and most popular beach destination. There are numerous hotels springing up along the city's busy main beach but a few kilometres from the centre you can find sanctuary in a boutique hotel with bungalows right on the sand. A short boat ride takes you to a hideaway property of understated luxury, castaway island style. Featuring private pools, outdoor bathrooms and a magical spa, this is an idyllic choice. If you're not content enjoying the immaculate beaches, try island-hopping by boat along the azure sea, snorkelling and enjoying a barbequed seafood lunch on board.

Mui Ne Peninsula

Four hours drive from Saigon, the tropical climate of the Mui Ne Peninsula, close to the port town of Phan Thiet, is home to arguably Vietnam's finest beaches. Surrounded by coconut palms, a number of bungalow-style resorts have begun to populate this 11km (6.8 miles) stretch of breathtaking coastline. Life runs at a relaxing pace here and in the evening you can enjoy dinner al fresco gazing across the dark ocean sparkling with the lights of fishing boats.

Phu Quoc Island

Tucked away in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc Island is home to a vibrant fishing community and pristine white sand beaches. Tourism hasn't really arrived here yet and there are only a small number of accommodation options but for those who don't mind having little to do but relax and unwind, it is the perfect option.
