Finnish Lapland has large areas of unspoiled wilderness and wild rolling fells inhabited by countless reindeer, a sight children will love – perhaps visit some on a farm and look out for the one with a red nose!
Another ‘staple’ of an authentic Lapland holiday, is the sound of huskies barking in excited anticipation, waiting to be harnessed for their next sledging adventure – they really do stay quiet only when running at full pelt!

Many featured holiday destinations are idyllic and quite rural where you are able to explore your surrounds by various modes of transport, the most popular usually involving four legged friends!

At some destinations, nearby ski resorts increase the number of optional activities at your disposal in case you wish to sample some downhill or snowboard action and they offer some excellent ski schools for the novice.

Whether you’d like to snowmobile to a reindeer or husky farm (and admire the pups!), take a wilderness dog sledge ride or head out in search of the northern lights, there are optional activities galore to keep the whole family occupied.

And at some resorts, in addition to skiing, there may be the opportunity to go swimming either indoors or out if you are brave enough! Of course you may just wish to make the most of your very own log cabin - after all, there are always snowmen and snow angels to be made!

Log cabins

The Finnish log cabin comes in many shapes and forms, with the concept reaching far back in history when remote countryside cabins were used by nomadic hunters and fishermen.

Thankfully today, the tradition has moved on and these cabins, still built in a time-honored fashion using native pine, are used by holidaymakers who enjoy the authenticity with modern creature comforts.

The cabins are built to a high standard and come in a variety of designs such as open plan or with separate bedrooms, for anything up to 6 persons. They have kitchenette and dining facilities, a lounge area and a private sauna.

In Finland, saunas are a sociable pastime, a great place to get the whole family together and while relaxing after a day out in the snow, plan further exciting adventures!
