Hidden away in a courtyard on the edge of Thamel, this stylish restaurant is housed in a former Rana's palace and the menu is packed with intriguing East-West fusion dishes. It's popular with diplomats, government ministers and the UN crowd.

Ghar-e-Kebab

Price: Expensive

The Indian restaurant at the Hotel de L'Annapurna serves the best North Indian cuisine in the city, with live Indian music in the evenings and a glass-walled kitchen where you can see your meal being prepared.

Bhojan Griha

Price: Expensive

Located in the beautifully renovated, 150-year-old former home of the Royal Priest, this upmarket restaurant serves sublime Nepali food. You can sit on cushions in the traditional Nepali dining room, or eat at Western-style tables and chairs.

Roadhouse Cafe

Price: Moderate

Famous for its wood-fired pizzas, this Thamel favourite also serves excellent coffee and delicious Nepali snacks such as sukuti (dried meat with chilli and ginger).

Fire & Ice

Price: Moderate

Nepal's finest pizzas and gelato, served in pleasantly informal surroundings in the heart of Thamel. The pizzas are cooked in a wood-fired oven, on thin, crisp bases, topped with the finest local and imported ingredients.

Yin Yang Restaurant

Price: Moderate

Many Kathmandu restaurants offer interpretations of Thai food, but Yin Yang offers authentic Thai dishes cooked by a real Thai chef. You can dine inside, but most patrons eat al fresco at the tables in the courtyard.

Yak Restaurant

Price: Cheap

A long-standing favourite for backpackers, with inexpensive, filling Tibetan and Nepali meals, cold beers and even tsongba (traditional millet beer) on the menu.

This narrow but towering multi-level restaurant is a favourite breakfast spot, with great views from its rooftop terrace. It’s cosy, friendly and the international menu – from curries to burgers – is surprisingly good for the price.

Himalayan Java

Price: Cheap

This calm coffee bar looks out over the main road into Thamel but offers a welcome respite from the crowds. People gather here throughout the day for superior cakes, panini and breakfasts, and the best espresso in the valley.
