Things to do in Kuala Lumpur
Observe the local birdlife – including hornbills – at Kuala Lumpur Bird Park near Lake Gardens, or get up close with semi wild elephants at the Elephant Orphanage Sanctuary at Kuala Gandah, about 90 minutes by bus from the city centre. Right in the city centre, though, is the Butterfly Park, home to 120 species of free flying insects.
Golfing is becoming increasingly popular in Southeast Asia, as is evidenced by the mushrooming of new courses around the city. Probably the most famous venue is the Royal Selangor Golf Club, situated right in the centre, but this can be difficult to access – there are numerous others within easy reach of the city centre.
Kuala Lumpur is about an hour from the coast, but if sea and sand is what you need a fix of, the nearest venue is Port Dickson, about 90km (50 miles) west of the city. It takes about a couple of hours or so by bus.
If you're based in Kuala Lumpur for more than just a few days, a number of companies offer short diving trips from the city to locations off the Malaysian coast.
Experience the rain forest at first hand at Templer's Park, to the north of the city, a nature reserve offering trails through the primeval jungle that once dominated the Malay Peninsula.
