The Kyoto hotels below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Luxury (over ¥30,000)
Moderate (¥10,000 to ¥30,000)
Cheap (up to ¥10,000)
These Kyoto hotel prices are based on the cost of a double room per night, including breakfast and all taxes.
Hiiragiya Ryokan
The Hiiragiya is the best and most exclusive ryokan in Kyoto. Since the mid-19th century, it has hosted the rich and famous in its elegant and comfortable rooms. There are two wings – the older full of traditional aesthetic charm, and the more modern (completed in 2006), a compliment of modern Japanese design. The service is impeccable and truly an experience in itself.
Hyatt Regency Kyoto
The leading luxury hotel in Kyoto, the Hyatt Regency is superbly located – the fascinating Sanjusangen-do Temple is right next door, the Kyoto National Museum is across the road, and Gion is within walking distance. The rooms are tastefully decorated with traditional Kyoto fabrics. There are three superb in-house restaurants to choose from and the spa specializes in traditional Japanese therapies.
Iori Kyoto Townhouse Stays
An excellent alternative to staying in a hotel or ryokan, especially if you are travelling with family members or a group, is to book a machiya, a traditional Kyoto merchant townhouse. Iori Kyoto Townhouse Stays offers downtown accommodation in restored, authentic wooden townhouses with a combination of traditional architecture (open entrances with complex beam-work, tatami-matted rooms, tokonoma alcoves etc) and modern furniture and conveniences. Visitors get a feel for traditional Japanese living while at the same time enjoying modern comforts.

Nishiyama Ryokan
More a Japanese-style hotel than a ryokan, the Nishiyama has been recently refurbished giving it a fresher and more modern feel. What it lacks in traditional ryokan atmosphere it more than makes up for in affordability, comfort and helpful front desk staff. The Japanese and Western-style rooms are spacious and relaxing. There’s a traditional shared bath in the basement and free monthly cultural events. The Nishiyama is conveniently located in Kyoto’s downtown area close to the city’s best shopping, sightseeing and nightlife.
The Palace Side Hotel
Located on the west side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace grounds, this hotel is very popular for its location, value for money, and friendly multilingual staff.
