Flying to Lebanon

The national airline is Middle East Airlines (MEA) (www.mea.com.lb). British Midland (www.flybmi.com) operates flights from London Heathrow to Beirut. The peak summer months and Christmas generally tend to be the most expensive times to fly.

Air notes:

Beirut’s Rafic Hariri Airport is set 7km (4 miles) from the centre of the city.

Flight times:

Flying time from London to Beirut is approximately five hours.

Departure tax:

L£100,000 for first class; L£75,000 for business class; and L£50,000 for economy class.

Driving to Lebanon

Entrance to Lebanon by land is possible from Syria, but it is wise to check with the embassy or Ministry of Tourism as crossings can be opened and closed at short notice.

By road note:

Best international routes are via Turkey and Aleppo-Homs and Lattakia in the Syrian Arab Republic along the north-south coastal road, and also the Beirut-Damascus trunk road.

Getting to Lebanon by boat

Main ports: Beirut (www.portdebeyrouth.com), Chekka, Jounieh, Tripoli, Sidon and Tyre.

Cruise ships:

Several cruise lines connect Beirut, Jounieh and Tripoli with the rest of the world. The sea connection between the Cypriot port of Larnaca and Jounieh in Lebanon may be closed and travellers considering that route are advised to check with the Ministry of Tourism or the embassy.
