Liberia travel advice

Travellers are advised against all but essential travel to Liberia outside of the capital, Monrovia anmd UN assistance outside of the city is limited. It is advised that adequate security arrangements for accommodation and travel are made with a reliable organisation in advance of arrival.

Although the security situation has improved since the end of the civil war in 2003, travellers should remain wary of the volatile and unpredictable situation. Demonstrations anywhere in the country can quickly become violent. The Liberia National Police, supported by UN peacekeepers, will respond to any public order incidents. Visitors should avoid large crowds.

The main security risks are violent crime and public order incidents. The former is a particular risk in Monrovia after dark. Travellers should not walk in Monrovia at night.

Visitors should avoid travelling alone, particularly at night and to secluded places. The ability of the national authorities and the UN to provide emergency assistance in areas outside Monrovia is more limited. It is recommended that visitors do not overnight outside Monrovia. Visitors should check the security situation before travelling to any part of the country.

Travellers should carry photographic identification at all times.

The threat from terrorism is low.
