On the third Sunday of each month at 1100, tourists congregate to watch the ceremonial Changing of the Republican Guard in front of the Presidential Palace in Belem just outside Lisbon city centre. With cameras at the ready, tourists also gather to watch the Charanga which sees 28 horsemen from the Cavalry Regiment riding pure-bred Lusitano horses as they perform ceremonial military marches. The ritual dates back to 1910 and the end of the Portuguese monarchy.

With an exciting music programme that ranges from classical to modern jazz, this summer event takes place in various venues in and around Estoril in Lisbon. The festival dates back to 1975 but has broadened its horizons in recent years to include orchestral and choral concerts as well as numerous outdoor performances and chamber recitals. Musicians, soloists and orchestras from all over the world attend this popular festival. There are also a number of masterclasses and workshops.
