Things to do in Ljubljana

Walking

Slovenia is an excellent walking destination with myriad options for walking all over the country. The highlight is the Julian Alps, a stunning national park laden with trails to cater for all abilities. Some companies now offer day trips from Ljubljana, while Bled and Bohinj are better bases. The long-distance routes can take over a week to traverse the country.

Climbing

Slovenia is a popular destination for serious climbers, especially in and around the Julian Alps, where great peaks, like mighty Triglav (2,863m/9,393ft), tempt thrill-seekers. There are options to suit all skill levels, though for most routes a local guide is strongly advised as the Slovenian mountains are not to be taken lightly. Bled and Bohinj are good bases for accessing the Julian Alps and easily accessible from Ljubljana. Day trips are available though overnight stays are recommended.

Mountain biking

Mountain biking in Slovenia has really come on in recent years. A number of companies now take bikers out to test their skills on the country’s mountains. The Julian Alps are great for mountain biking as is Logarska Dolina, with a variety of routes to suit all tastes from serious downhill to rolling tracks ideal for longer distance rides. Day trips from Ljubljana can be booked in the city.

White-water sports

The resort town of Bovec in the stunning Soca Valley is the epicentre of the country’s white-water sports. Visitors can hurl themselves down the wild waters of the Soca on a raft or on a canoe, or even on hydrospeed board. A number of companies organise trips, which can be tailored to cater for absolute beginners or those looking to develop their grade-5 skills. Day trips can be booked in Ljubljana though those looking to try more than one sport should spend the night.

Winter sports

The resort of Kranjska Gora is is the best equipped resort in the country, and only an hour or so from Ljubljana; it offers myriad runs, from nursery slopes to white-knuckle black runs. Other good resorts include Kanin and Bohinj; Planica is the place to head for ski jumping.
