According to legend, the deity calmed the raging waters and provided a safe passage for a boat caught out at sea in a ferocious storm. Grateful for their safe return to dry land, the sailors built the A-Ma Shrine at the spot where they first returned to land. Racing in ornate boats that measure about 10m (30ft), each one is manned by teams of about 20 paddlers making this an exciting event and a great festival for spectators. The festival is held in honour of the Wat Yuen, a court advisor from the third century BC, who drowned himself in a dramatic protest against the emperor's decision to go to war. As legend has it, the local people took to the water in boats to protect his body from being eaten by fish.

Taking place on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, the Mid-Autumn Festival or 'Moon Cake Festival' is a great celebration for Chinese communities throughout the world. It honours the revolt against the Mongols in the 14th century. History has it that the plans for the uprising were hidden inside cakes and distributed to compatriots. Thus sweet 'Moon Cakes' are now an important symbol of the festival. It's traditionally a time to come together with friends and families and many people mark the occasion with a big party and meal with loved ones. Macau celebrates the occasion with events at the Praia Grande and Nam Van Lakes, all gardens and Hac-Sa and Cheoc-Van beaches on the nearby island of Coloane. Lanterns are often lit and set adrift on lakes and rivers.
