Hotels in Marseille
Marseille has traditionally drawn a huge cross section of different travellers, from well-heeled Côte d’Azur jetsetters to Europe-traversing backpackers. Hotels in Marseille reflect this, catering for a wide range of different tastes and budgets. Those properties located either on the coast or around the Vieux Port tend to draw the most plaudits.
The Marseille hotels below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Luxury (over €200)
Moderate (€100 to €200)
Cheap (up to €100)
These Marseille hotel prices are the lowest standard rates for a double room, including VAT and room tax but excluding breakfast, unless otherwise specified.
Le Petit Nice Passédat
Marseille's most exclusive hotel is an exquisite 19th-century villa in Hellenic style set in lush gardens on a rocky promontory overlooking the Mediterranean. Run by the Passédat family since 1917, there is no denying the hotel is pricey (it even charges extra for breakfast on the terrace), but the rooms are exceedingly comfortable and beautifully decorated, the service is top notch, and the restaurant one of the best in town. The views over the bay are fabulous, especially at sunset.
Radisson Blu Hotel, Marseille Vieux Port
This 4-star hotel enjoys a superb location right by the Vieux Port, offering 189 modern rooms and suites, a gourmet restaurant, a fitness centre and a rooftop swimming pool with sweeping views over Marseille. The hotel has a partnership with the Cinq Mondes Spa, which lays on body treatments from around the world. Extensive meeting and conference facilities are also available.
Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port
Nestled between the rocky headland of the Pharo and the Fort St Nicolas, the indulgent Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port offers a near-unbeatable panoramic view of Marseille. The hotel boasts a swimming pool, eight meeting rooms (the largest of which can accommodate up to 130 people), a cocktail bar, a gastronomic restaurant, and a new So SPA.
Grand Hotel Beauvau Marseille Vieux Port
Overlooking the Vieux Port, this is one of the oldest hotels in Marseille (established in 1860), and now a 4-star hotel after an extensive refurbishment. Many famous writers have stayed here, including George Sand (who eloped here with Chopin in 1839). The boutique hotel boasts 73 air-conditioned, soundproof rooms featuring antique Provençal-style furniture. There is no car park.
Hipark Residences
With a choice of 114 smartly appointed apartments available for short, medium-term and longer stays, the Hipark Residences are a good bet for those looking to break the usual city-hotel mould. They’re located in the southeast of Marseille and place an emphasis on spacious, modern design. Given the levels of comfort on offer, they represent good value.
Hotel Pullman Marseille Palm Beach
Located by the sea between the Vieux Port and the Convention Centre, and offering a unique view of the Prado Bay, the renovated Hotel Pullman Marseille Palm Beach has stylish, contemporary rooms and suites, all with sea views. The hotel offers non-smoking floors, fitness centre, swimming pool (billed as “the best in Marseille”), sauna, Jacuzzi, jogging course and landing stage. Wi-Fi is also available.
Au Vieux Panier
A winningly atmospheric option located in the snaking lanes of the historic Le Panier quarter, this is about as removed as you can get from the corporate sheen of the larger chain hotels in Marseille. The five rooms are all designed individually by different local artists, while the building itself (a 17th-century edifice, formerly a grocery shop) adds to the sense of warmth and creativity. Highly recommended.
Hotel Lutetia
Conveniently located in a quiet street close to the famous Canebière, and only 200m (656ft) from the railway station, this is a charming, comfortable hotel in the heart of Marseille, with easy metro access. The hotel is well kept, and the 29 rooms come equipped with telephone, TV with Canal+ and free Wi-Fi internet connection in the lobby.
Le Corbusier
Architecture buffs will relish the opportunity to stay at this hotel, located within Le Corbusier's post-war vision of the future: the Cité Radieuse. Conceived to address East Marseille's overcrowding problem in the 1950s, the grand scheme was to accommodate thousands of local residents in ‘off-the-ground', self-contained units. While many of the hotel's 21 rooms are on the small side, they are comfy enough, and the rooftop garden offers seascapes to die for. The hotel is only four metro stops away from the centre of Marseille.
